Pubic Lice - A Tiny Problem

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Public lice are small insects, only 2 mm long, yellowy-grey in colour and can cause infections. The other name of pubic lice is crab lice. These parasites which mainly reside in the body hair can infect other people through sexual contact. The pubic lice are not capable of flying or jumping so they spread the disease by close contacts especially through sexual contacts. If an infected person shares his or her clothing, beddings and towels they pubic lice can infect the other person. They mostly reside in pubic hair and prefer coarse hair on hairy legs, underarms, chests and abdomens as the perfect place to spread the disease. Sometimes they can also move up to the head and reside in the hair there.

Symptoms of Pubic Lice

Terrible itching in the infected region can be the first indication of pubic lice. Generally the area which is affected can be easily distinguished by certain symptoms. If one notices a black like substance in their underwears, they can be rest assured that lice droppings are responsible for the powder like substance. You can actually see the lice in the affected region. In the hair of the affected area one can also see brown eggs which are clear indications that there are pubic lice in the region.

Types of Pubic Lice

There are various types of pubic lice. It is seen that the male members of the family are more prone to such an infection than the female members. If the infection of pubic lice is found mainly in hair of armpits or hair of the beard or any coarse hair then the disease is known as Phthiriasis or Pediculosis pubis. If the eye lashes are infected then it is known as Phthiriasis palpebrarum.

Treatment of Pubic Lice

In most of the cases killing the germs or the pubic lice is the most effective way to eliminate the problem. Lotions or medical shampoos are available in the market which helps in removing the lice. Lindane shampoo is mostly used to eradicate the problem. A special cream or an anti-itch medication can be applied in the affected area to reduce the itching. The problem may persist even after the treatment so it is always better to use the anti-itch medication. The hair of the affected region can be either shaved off or groomed so that dead lice can no longer stay in the area. After the initial days of treatment another course of medication is strongly recommended after 10 days for the removal of the root cause. If the eyelashes are affected then a permethrin formulation is to be applied.  Pubic lice are also associated with other sexually transmitted diseases or STD. If the patient is known to have STD then the affected person should also for a test of STD as there is higher probabilities of such a disease.

Advice for Pubic Lice

It is always better to avoid an affected person until and unless he or she is fully cured. There are greater chances of contamination if the affected person maintains a close contact with a normal person. Even if they have maintained a close contact it is better to treat them properly to avoid any chances of re-infection. All the towels, clothes, bedding must be washed, cleaned in hot steaming water and then washed once more in the machine to remove the germs properly. Cleanliness is a must and people once affected should be more careful to avoid such a problem as there are chances of relapse. Use of Lindane shampoo helps in the removal of pubic lice. However according to a recent study by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention it is shown that Lindane shampoo should not be used just after a bath and also not by those people who have acute dermatitis, pregnant women. People who have experienced seizures should be careful while using this shampoo. Even application of this shampoo on infants should be done in the most cautious manner to avoid any unnecessary hazards.

Pyloric stenosis - The Monster in the Stomach

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Pyloric stenosis is a common disease of the stomach where the outlet of the stomach which empties the food particles in the small intestines shrinks. The gastrointestinal tract is affected and the babies vomit forcefully and cannot retain any of the food items. The problem is acute in case of new born babies especially among the boys. Pyloric stenosis is a rare disease and the ratio of infection is only one in four thousand children is affected by such a problem. Babies who are only two or seven weeks old are the most affected and this disease rarely occurs in babies who are more than six months old.

Causes of Pyloric Stenosis

If the muscle wall thickens it can lead to this problem. A medical condition known as hypertrophy of muscle walls can also cause pyloric stenosis. In most of the cases it is known as the most probable causes; however one cannot pinpoint any specific cause for this kind of condition. Doctors are of the opinion that a pyloric stenosis affected person is actually born with such a problem. Many doctors feel that genetic factors affect the patient. If one looks into the family history they will probably see that any member on the mother’s side is affected. Generally it is the maternal hormones which actually trigger off such a problem. An allergic reaction can also lead to pyloric stenosis. In several cases it is noticed that the baby does not have a receptor in the muscle. This receptor is useful to determine the nitric oxide, a chemical which helps in the relaxation of the muscle.

Symptoms of Pyloric Stenosis

Among the major symptoms or indications of pyloric stenosis vomiting actually helps to determine whether the person is affected by this disease or not. Vomiting may be mild in the first few days, but the acuteness of the problem can be determined by the forceful nature of the vomits until it almost becomes projectile, that is the vomits become extremely forceful resulting in long spurts. Frequency in vomiting helps to determine the cause of the disease. Even after the baby vomits it experiences pangs of hunger and if there is alarming weight loss of the baby or there are signs of dehydration or greenish diarrhoea the doctors can be sure that it is a case of acute pyloric stenosis. If the baby I suffering from constipation or there is presence of mucus in the stools, the doctors become sure of such a problem. The babies not only become tired they become less active.

Treatment of Pyloric Stenosis

To determine the cause of the problem the doctor asks several questions. It includes queries about the nature and type of vomits and the feeding of babies, after the baby is examined properly the doctor will see whether there is an existence of a pyloric mass, a kind of a movable lump in the stomach or not. If it strong then pyloric stenosis is detected. After the necessary tests the baby is taken to the hospital and preparations are made for the surgery. Intravenous fluids are given so that the bay is not dehydrated. Surgery includes pyloromyotomy where the thick muscles are cut and the obstruction is removed. After the operation the babies return to a normal diet. The babies are given food and the babies can also be breastfed only after 3 to 4 hours after the operation.

Advice on Pyloric Stenosis

Even after the surgery there might be bouts of vomits as there are swells but that does not indicate any complications. There are generally no problems once the pyloromyotomy is performed and an appointment with the doctor in the following weeks will reveal whether the baby is healing properly or not or if there are subsequent problems. However even after the first few days, if the problem of vomit persists, this might be the symptom of some severe problem which has hitherto not been detected. Your child then might be suffering from GERD or the problem of gastritis.
