Pubic Lice - A Tiny Problem
Public lice are small insects, only 2 mm long, yellowy-grey in colour and can cause infections. The other name of pubic lice is crab lice. These parasites which mainly reside in the body hair can infect other people through sexual contact. The pubic lice are not capable of flying or jumping so they spread the disease by close contacts especially through sexual contacts. If an infected person shares his or her clothing, beddings and towels they pubic lice can infect the other person. They mostly reside in pubic hair and prefer coarse hair on hairy legs, underarms, chests and abdomens as the perfect place to spread the disease. Sometimes they can also move up to the head and reside in the hair there.
Symptoms of Pubic Lice
Terrible itching in the infected region can be the first indication of pubic lice. Generally the area which is affected can be easily distinguished by certain symptoms. If one notices a black like substance in their underwears, they can be rest assured that lice droppings are responsible for the powder like substance. You can actually see the lice in the affected region. In the hair of the affected area one can also see brown eggs which are clear indications that there are pubic lice in the region.
Types of Pubic Lice
There are various types of pubic lice. It is seen that the male members of the family are more prone to such an infection than the female members. If the infection of pubic lice is found mainly in hair of armpits or hair of the beard or any coarse hair then the disease is known as Phthiriasis or Pediculosis pubis. If the eye lashes are infected then it is known as Phthiriasis palpebrarum.
Treatment of Pubic Lice
In most of the cases killing the germs or the pubic lice is the most effective way to eliminate the problem. Lotions or medical shampoos are available in the market which helps in removing the lice. Lindane shampoo is mostly used to eradicate the problem. A special cream or an anti-itch medication can be applied in the affected area to reduce the itching. The problem may persist even after the treatment so it is always better to use the anti-itch medication. The hair of the affected region can be either shaved off or groomed so that dead lice can no longer stay in the area. After the initial days of treatment another course of medication is strongly recommended after 10 days for the removal of the root cause. If the eyelashes are affected then a permethrin formulation is to be applied. Pubic lice are also associated with other sexually transmitted diseases or STD. If the patient is known to have STD then the affected person should also for a test of STD as there is higher probabilities of such a disease.
Advice for Pubic Lice
It is always better to avoid an affected person until and unless he or she is fully cured. There are greater chances of contamination if the affected person maintains a close contact with a normal person. Even if they have maintained a close contact it is better to treat them properly to avoid any chances of re-infection. All the towels, clothes, bedding must be washed, cleaned in hot steaming water and then washed once more in the machine to remove the germs properly. Cleanliness is a must and people once affected should be more careful to avoid such a problem as there are chances of relapse. Use of Lindane shampoo helps in the removal of pubic lice. However according to a recent study by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention it is shown that Lindane shampoo should not be used just after a bath and also not by those people who have acute dermatitis, pregnant women. People who have experienced seizures should be careful while using this shampoo. Even application of this shampoo on infants should be done in the most cautious manner to avoid any unnecessary hazards.
