Pyloric stenosis - The Monster in the Stomach

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Pyloric stenosis is a common disease of the stomach where the outlet of the stomach which empties the food particles in the small intestines shrinks. The gastrointestinal tract is affected and the babies vomit forcefully and cannot retain any of the food items. The problem is acute in case of new born babies especially among the boys. Pyloric stenosis is a rare disease and the ratio of infection is only one in four thousand children is affected by such a problem. Babies who are only two or seven weeks old are the most affected and this disease rarely occurs in babies who are more than six months old.

Causes of Pyloric Stenosis

If the muscle wall thickens it can lead to this problem. A medical condition known as hypertrophy of muscle walls can also cause pyloric stenosis. In most of the cases it is known as the most probable causes; however one cannot pinpoint any specific cause for this kind of condition. Doctors are of the opinion that a pyloric stenosis affected person is actually born with such a problem. Many doctors feel that genetic factors affect the patient. If one looks into the family history they will probably see that any member on the mother’s side is affected. Generally it is the maternal hormones which actually trigger off such a problem. An allergic reaction can also lead to pyloric stenosis. In several cases it is noticed that the baby does not have a receptor in the muscle. This receptor is useful to determine the nitric oxide, a chemical which helps in the relaxation of the muscle.

Symptoms of Pyloric Stenosis

Among the major symptoms or indications of pyloric stenosis vomiting actually helps to determine whether the person is affected by this disease or not. Vomiting may be mild in the first few days, but the acuteness of the problem can be determined by the forceful nature of the vomits until it almost becomes projectile, that is the vomits become extremely forceful resulting in long spurts. Frequency in vomiting helps to determine the cause of the disease. Even after the baby vomits it experiences pangs of hunger and if there is alarming weight loss of the baby or there are signs of dehydration or greenish diarrhoea the doctors can be sure that it is a case of acute pyloric stenosis. If the baby I suffering from constipation or there is presence of mucus in the stools, the doctors become sure of such a problem. The babies not only become tired they become less active.

Treatment of Pyloric Stenosis

To determine the cause of the problem the doctor asks several questions. It includes queries about the nature and type of vomits and the feeding of babies, after the baby is examined properly the doctor will see whether there is an existence of a pyloric mass, a kind of a movable lump in the stomach or not. If it strong then pyloric stenosis is detected. After the necessary tests the baby is taken to the hospital and preparations are made for the surgery. Intravenous fluids are given so that the bay is not dehydrated. Surgery includes pyloromyotomy where the thick muscles are cut and the obstruction is removed. After the operation the babies return to a normal diet. The babies are given food and the babies can also be breastfed only after 3 to 4 hours after the operation.

Advice on Pyloric Stenosis

Even after the surgery there might be bouts of vomits as there are swells but that does not indicate any complications. There are generally no problems once the pyloromyotomy is performed and an appointment with the doctor in the following weeks will reveal whether the baby is healing properly or not or if there are subsequent problems. However even after the first few days, if the problem of vomit persists, this might be the symptom of some severe problem which has hitherto not been detected. Your child then might be suffering from GERD or the problem of gastritis.
